Automatic, with reasons
  • The problem

    CVs claim, tests show

A listed skill tells you nothing about how well someone uses it.

A timed test shows how well they actually use the skill.

  • The problem

    Writing tests takes days

Good questions at the right level are slow to write from scratch.

Start from a ready-made test, or have one drafted in about a minute.

  • The problem

    Marking takes longer

Reading written answers for a whole shortlist doesn't scale.

Answers are scored as candidates finish, with the reasoning shown.

How it works in Winkle.

  1. 01

    Pick or draft

Choose from the test library, or paste a job description and Winkle drafts one.

  2. 02

    Review every question

Edit, swap or remove anything before it goes out.

  3. 03

    Send one link

Candidates take it in the browser, against the clock.

  4. 04

    Scored as they finish

Multiple choice marks itself; written answers get a score with reasons.

  5. 05

    Compare and decide

See results side by side and move your shortlist on.

Start from the library, or from the job.

Either way you get a draft, not a sent test. Edit, swap or remove any question before a candidate sees it.

From your job description

Paste it. A draft in about a minute.

“We’re hiring a backend engineer to build payment APIs in Go, own Postgres performance and keep our workers reliable…”

  • Explain how you'd paginate a large Postgres table.
  • Which HTTP status fits a failed validation?
  • Fix the goroutine leak in this worker.
  • What does this Go snippet print?

Illustrative. Every drafted question is yours to edit before it’s sent.

Eight ways to ask.

Mix them in one test. Work-style questions can sit alongside, and they’re never scored: there’s no wrong way to prefer working.

Multiple choice

One right answer from several.

Multiple select

Every answer that applies.

TrueFalse

True or false

Quick checks of a fact.

Fill in the blank

The missing word, in its sentence.

Short answer

Written, scored against a model answer.

func solve() {

return ok

}

Coding

Write a solution, in 10 languages.

print(2 ** 3)
→?

Code output

Read code, say what it prints.

Debugging

Find the bug and fix it.

Marked as they finish.

Choice questions mark themselves. Written answers are scored against a model answer, with partial credit and the reason beside the mark.

Coding tests open with a warm-up task that’s never scored, so the editor is familiar before anything counts.

Marked sheet · one candidate

Illustrative. Invented answers.

90

36/40

  • Why 6/10: Puts a cache in front of product reads, as the model answer does. It never says how the cache is kept fresh when a price changes, so partial credit.

What you get.

From a job description, in about a minute.

  • Anti-cheat built in

  • Code questions too

Code reading, debugging and coding in 10 languages.

Questions, answered.

About skills assessments with Winkle.

  • Can I edit a ready-made test?

Yes. Using a test puts a draft in your account, and you can edit, remove or swap any question before it's sent.

  • How are written answers scored?

Against a model answer, with partial credit for answers that are partly right. Each score comes with the reasoning behind it.

  • Are work-style questions scored?

No. Questions about how someone likes to work have no right answer, so they're never marked or added to the score. You read them as they are.

  • Where can I see the tests?

The test library is public: browse every test by skill and level before you sign up.
